Dying to self

In the last minute
Of the last hour
On the last day
Will I give the shirt off my back
To the person next to me
If they ask for it?

And in that same moment
If I find myself in need of something
Will I put away my self-sufficiency
Will I suffer my pride to ask for
Some comfort from another?
Will I forgive those who have wronged me?
Will I say I’m sorry to those I have wronged?
Will I ask forgiveness
And accept whatever is given
Or withheld from me?

In the last minute
Of the last hour
Of the last day
Will I stand erect
Naked and shorn
Of all that is me
Facing the Glory of God
Deserving of right judgement
And receiving Mercy instead?

Will I remember today
That every day
And every hour
And every minute
Is the last?
