Prayer For Healing of our Hearts

The stories on the news recently, Charleston, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, The migrant crisis in Africa and the Mediterranean, and on and on and on; they all threaten to overwhelm us to the point where we feel we must either say “I can’t handle it any more” or “I just don’t care any more.” Both positions are dangerous.

This, as always, is a time for prayer and a time for action.  For me, as a person of faith, I offer up the pain in my heart for all those who suffer today, both here at home and those across the oceans. I know in my heart that God can take the worst messes we humans can create through the miss-use of our free will, and make something good come from it. That is, perhaps, little comfort to those whose pain is so heavy right now, but that is why we must pray for them, to help lift their souls back up from the abyss of death and despair. and to help us heal the injury to our own spirits.

And we must act. Not through legislation or resolutions of condemnation, nor through looking for “the match that started the forest fire.” The action we must take lies within each of our hearts. We must learn to forgive injuries received and we must train ourselves to forget those times we were hurt by others, or at the very least, not to dwell upon them. We must force ourselves to smile and offer a kind word to those who are strange to us, who are different from us, who frighten us. We must learn to receive all that happens to us as a gift from God, regardless if it seems beneficial or detrimental to our perception of what we deserve. We must learn to give thanks to God for all that God is.

From Chapter 3 of the book of Wisdom:
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God
and no torment shall touch them. They seemed,
in the view of the foolish, to be dead,
and their passing away was thought an affliction,
and their going forth from us, utter destruction.

But they are in peace.

For if to others, indeed, they seem punished,
yet is their hope full of immortality.
Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed,
because God tried them and found them worthy of himself.

As gold in the furnace, he proved them,
and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.

In the time of their judgment they shall shine
and dart about as sparks through stubble.

They shall judge nations and rule over Peoples,
and the LORD shall be their King forever.

Those who trust in him shall understand truth,
and the faithful shall abide with him in love:
Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,
and his care is with the elect.
